Winter Activities in Billericay

14th November 2022

The Essex town of Billericay has something for everyone, even when the rain is falling and the mercury drops. From parks and woodlands to race tracks and theatres, we’ve put together a guide to the best things to do in (and around) Billericay this winter.

1. Barleylands Farm Park

Barleylands is an exciting, interactive day out for all of the family. At the park, there is the opportunity to find farmyard animals such as goats and sheep, as well as the more unusual llamas and exotics. Many of the animals can be fed and petted by visitors.  The indoor and outdoor play areas feature activities for children of all ages such as jumping pillows and dino-cars. You can even enjoy a tractor ride around the fields. Of course, the park can be extremely muddy and cold in the winter, so make sure you’re prepared with thick coats and wellies!

2. Billericay Christmas Market

The Christmas market is one of the most popular annual events in Billericay. Run by the Rotary Club of Billericay Mayflower, this winter activity not only gives you the chance to fill up on festive food, drink and crafts but also helps to raise funds for local causes. This year, the Billericay Christmas Market will be held on Sunday 4th December.

3. Lake Meadows

Looking for somewhere to stretch your legs and enjoy nature? Lake Meadows is a large park that hosts various community events throughout the year, such as the Billericay Fireworks. The picturesque fishing lake at the park is the main attraction for keen anglers, but other visitors can also enjoy a skate park, play area, tennis courts and even a swimming pool. Once you’ve spent some time exploring in the crisp, winter air, head down to the volunteer-run cafe for a hot tea or coffee.

4. Imperial Bird of Prey Academy

The shopping village at Barleylands is home to a variety of studios, one of the most popular being the Imperial Bird of Prey Academy. At the Academy, you can experience a range of falconry and bird of prey activities throughout the year. In December, the popular Owls by Candelight experience gives visitors the chance to fly owls at night.

5. Go Karting

Looking for a winter activity that will fill you with adrenaline? Nearby Brentwood Karting allows thrillseekers to race at speeds of up to 50mph in 270cc karts. The all-weather tarmac surface at the track means that the typically wet, British weather won’t put a stop to your fun!

6. Hopefield Animal Sanctuary

Animal lovers are sure to enjoy meeting the residents of Hopefield in Brentwood, just a short drive from Billericay. For nearly 40 years, this sanctuary has been caring for unwanted, mistreated animals from Essex and the surrounding areas. Your small admission fee will help towards the care of the 500+ animals that you will get to see during your visit.

7. Mr Mulligan’s Crazy Golf

If the weather outside is truly frightful, you may be looking for an indoor activity to keep you busy for a few hours. Mr Mulligan’s Crazy Golf offers pool tables, electro-darts and 2 themed, mini golf courses. Located in Basildon Festival Leisure Park, there are plenty of other activities nearby such as bowling and a cinema.

8. Adventure Island

Take a short drive from Billericay to the coastal town of Southend and enjoy arcades, fairground rides and rollercoasters at Adventure Island. You can even finish off your day with traditional fish and chips! The theme park is open most weekends throughout the winter, but be sure to check the opening times before visiting.

9. Chelmsford Theatre

If you’re a fan of performing arts, the Chelmsford Theatre is sure to have something for you. Upcoming shows include the Johnny Cash Roadshow, 9 to 5: The Musical, Strong Enough - The Ultimate Tribute Concert to Cher and Madagascar - A Musical Adventure.

10. King George’s Playing Fields

The recently transformed playground and park is now fully inclusive and offers amazing play equipment for those with special physical needs and disabilities. Other attractions at the park which can be enjoyed during the winter include a sensory room and soft play. The woodlands that surround the playing fields are expansive and can be explored for hours.
