Information About Dalston

Dalston is located in East London and is part of the London borough of Hackney. It originally began as a Hamlet but was expanded to include the areas of Kingsland and Shackwell as the region urbanised. House prices in the area have risen recently to 8% above the London average which has largely been attributed to the gentrification of the area. This is also in part due to regeneration in the area, with the East London line extension for the Overground and the reopening of Dalston Junction railway station. These features were also an important part of the London 2012 Olympic Games held in the capital.

The area has a number of notable buildings including a large Victorian church built in the 1860s. St. Mark’s Church is known as the largest parish church in London. Its large size earned it the nickname of the “Cathedral of the East End”. Dalston is also known to be the inspiration behind the famous BBC soap opera Eastenders. Albert Square was based on Fassett Square and Dalston and was originally intended to be filmed onsite. Neighbouring Ridley Road Market is also the inspiration for Walford Market in the series.
