The coronavirus pandemic has caused uncertainty throughout the summer and cancelled many of our plans this year. But with the situation looking like it is improving, many establishments and activities have now started to re-open and plans are going ahead for September events and onwards. This could of course change at any time if the situation worsens again so make sure that you closely monitor any plans and check that the event is still taking place right up until the day of your planned trip. But we have put together a list of some of the top things to do in Essex this Autumn 2020.
Colchester Castle
Colchester Castle have recently reopened to the public and are now taking bookings for visitors which makes a great day out. You must book in advance before visiting and you will not be able to purchase entry tickets on the day. They are currently operating timed entries and a one way system to reduce the risk of infection and have hand sanitising stations throughout. They are also only admitting groups of six so you will have to enter separately if your family is larger than this. Visitors are also asked to wear face covering in accordance with government guidelines. Costs are £10 for adults and £5.95 for children aged 4-16.

Chelmsford – Murder Mystery Treasure Trail
If you are looking for something fun to do with the kids this Autumn then a murder mystery trail could be a great cheap day out! This self guide tour around Chelmsford is ideal for entertaining your children and also getting some exercise outdoors at the same time. The trail itself is around 1.6 miles long and will take 2 hours to complete and suitable for ages 6 and over. You can purchase a map online for £10 and you can even personalise the map with your own images and text for just a bit more at £13.

Mr Mullingan’s Mini Golf Basildon
If you are looking for something to do with the kids during the August Half Term then why not try your hand at Minigolf? They have recently re-opened with some coronavirus restrictions such as only 6 people per group and hand sanitising but masks are not compulsory. You must book before arrival though. There is parking onsite and toilets available with two different courses for you to choose from. There is also a limited food and drink menu available on site too. Costs are £8.50 per adult and £6.50 per child or they also do a family ticket for £27.00. You also get a discount if you do both courses, with a family ticket costing £42.50.

Great Notley Country Park
Another low cost activity this autumn is taking a trip to Great Notley Country Park, with children’s play facilities and sky ropes at an extra cost. The park however is free to enter and with some great weather predicted this September it could be a perfect day out. The skylark café has reopened now too for refreshments. Parking costs £6.50 for more than 3 hours but you could look for free or cheaper parking locally. If your children want to have a go on the sky ropes then this will be an extra cost of £4.00 per child and £10.00 for adults.
