How to Move and Store Wooden Furniture

4th January 2017

If you’re thinking of moving then it’s more than likely you will have heavy furniture to move and store. You might not have enough space in your new home for these bulky items and you might want to consider storage options. But either way, you will still need to move the bulky items out of your old home. Heavy wooden furniture can be a pain to transport as it is so bulky and difficult to manoeuvre. It’s more than likely that you will need a hand to move it but there are some ways you can make the process easier. We have some top tips to help you move wooden furniture with ease and prepare it for storage.

Treat wooden furniture

It is important that you look after your wooden furniture to make sure it doesn’t deteriorate and become damaged over the years. Moving furniture makes it susceptible to adverse weather conditions and changes in temperature as your transport it from one place to another. Any environmental changes can mean your desk is more likely to crack or split, which can be difficult or impossible to repair. But this can be easily prevented by using a specialist wood treatment beforehand to make sure it is protected against these problems. Simply apply a coat of wax or furniture polish a few weeks before you plan on storing the furniture.

Prepare for moving

The first thing you should do is prepare your furniture for moving so that it is easier to transport it and move it. You should make sure that all personal belongings are emptied out of your furniture before you decide to move it. Leaving items inside will only make it heavier and these could get damaged in the process of moving it.  If possible, it would make things much easier to disassemble your wooden furniture beforehand. However, this is not often possible as it is likely your furniture is solid and not intended to come apart. But you might be able to remove smaller parts of your furniture such as door handles and knobs to make transportation easier and avoid damage.

Use the right tools

Just like any job, it is much easier to move furniture, be it to your new home or storage, if you have the right tools. Furniture can be extremely heavy and may require more than two people to move large bulky items. But you can make this task easier by using a furniture dolly so that you can easily wheel the furniture about. You should also make sure that you use the right materials when wrapping the furniture for storage, as this can make a huge difference. Using bubble wrap or other protective plastics can cause condensation and damage your furniture, so make sure you use fabric covers before wrapping them in plastic.
